  • The Nihon Institute is a specialized learning program focused on Japanese language, culture, history, and society. We combine classroom-style learning with real-world cultural immersion in Japan.

  • Our programs take place in Japan, with courses and cultural activities in major cities and historically significant regions (e.g., Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto).

  • Courses are led by experienced educators and cultural specialists based in Japan and the US. Many hold advanced degrees and have extensive teaching backgrounds.

  • Undergraduate students and recent graduates from the United States. Cohort size is limited to 30.

  • Submit the application form at apply.nihon.institute. You will receive a confirmation email when your application is received. Once submitted, our admissions team will review it and contact you within 1–2 weeks.

  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but spaces are limited. We recommend applying at least 3–4 months before your intended start date. Space may close earlier.

  • Selection is based on academic seriousness, the application essay, and overall fit with the program.

  • No. The program provides language support in Japanese, English, and Chinese.

  • Summer 2026. The program runs for two weeks in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nagoya.

  • Tuition includes housing, meals, seminars, course materials, local transportation during activities, cultural excursions, and on-site support staff.

  • A deposit is due upon acceptance. The balance is due before departure. Refund policy is being finalized and will be shared before offers are issued.

  • We offer limited merit-based and need-based scholarships. Details about amount and number of awards will be shared in admission notices.

  • Yes. Housing is included and arranged by our staff — typically shared apartments or dormitory-style housing convenient to program sites.

  • Group meals are included. Dietary requirements will be collected after admission.

  • Airfare is not included. We may arrange an optional group flight from select U.S. hubs, subject to airline availability and minimum headcount. You’re free to book independently.

  • Visa requirements depend on nationality and program details. Confirmed guidance will be sent after acceptance. Do not book travel until instructed.

  • No. Beginner-friendly language instruction is built into our curriculum, and staff are bilingual. Prior study is welcome but not required.

  • You should definitely bring seasonal clothes and comfortable walking shoes. We’ll send a detailed packing and preparation guide after enrollment, including climate tips and cultural etiquette notes.
